When judged alone this is an excellent camera that delivers spectacular results. Mostly because it inherits the same groundbreaking tech from it''s 5 year old predecessor, the EM-5 mk II, like focus bracketing and high res mode. However, in Olympus'' lineup the 4 year old E-M1mk II is a better camera for about the same price. In the case of the E-M5 III, Olympus oddly chose to make the battery smaller while keeping 300 shots per charge when they could have kept the same battery and increased the paltry battery life. While it''s an improvement on its predecessor, the 5 III adds no new technology from Olympus. On the other hand, the E-M1mk II has the same sensor and processor, but dual card slots, better battery life, higher frame rate, and more frames for pro capture mode. The 5 III is a redundant camera in Olympus'' lineup that confuses things and I wish I realized these differences before I bought it.

Tried a variety of different options on th market before settling on the Olympus E-M5 Mark III. November and December of this year either tried in store, worked with a friends,or returned, the following: Canon M6 Mark II, Fujifilm XT30, Canon m50, and Sony 6400..:All great cameras, the picture quality goes far beyond my capabilities as a photographer with any of these cameras. But the best camera is the one that goes/comes with you as you venture out to take pictures, the one that feels “right in the hand”, the one you will USE. This is where the E-M5 mkIII shines: great pics, weather sealed, the best image stabilization for shaky hands, fast (not the fastest but in today’s world all the above cameras are FAST), the right size (with a good prime it’s the perfect walk around camera), and lastly the lens choices are vast...

So I would suggest you get one and go out there and take some pics. We all worry way too much about comparing which cameras specs are better than another’s, and miss the point of getting back to picture taking...

I started out with a EM10-MK iii and loved it but was really excited for all the great features in the bigger brother EM5 MKiii. In particular the weather sealing, high res shot, better AF. All in a package hardly bigger than the EM10. My one concern was their decison to go to a plastic body instead of metal, but in the end I decided they must have known what they were doing... I Ordered one pretty early on and within 6 months of very light use noticed the tri pod mounting area was cracking. And it kept getting worse. To the point where the bottom plate was separating from the rest of the body. Making is useless on a trip pod and flopping around. Even before it cracked the frame is so weak the camera will flex with any of the metal pro lenses, and the 12-100 F4 pro is my everyday lens.
I sent it back to them for warrenty and they initially told me it wasn''t covered, I was able to complain and get it covered. But still this should be covered by warrenty without question, shouldn''t have to fight it. I''ve now had my repaired body for about 4 months of very light use and have already noticed another hairline crack appearing!!!! And this time around I was extra careful not to over tighten and even bought a larger L bracket to hopefully spread out the forces on the bottom plate.
So incredibly disappointing. One of the things I loved about Olympus was how tough and durable the bodies where. My EM10 is a tank and took so much abuse and still works 100% even though it''s not technically weather sealed. At this point I''d just want my money back so I can switch to a different brand unless they come out with a design improvement or a replacement bottom plate made from metal. It''s just not useable. Such as shame as the feature set is exactly what I want, they just had to put it in such a horribly under engineered cheap plastic shell instead of spending the extra $20 to make the plate from metal.

Before I give my review of this awesome camera, a little background on my photography journey. I learned the basics of photography on a Nikon D5300 (over 5yrs ago), then over time I upgraded to a full frame D750. After years of shooting for fun and semi-professionally, I decided to down size and I purchased a used Olympus Em10 mark I. This is when I fell in love with the M43 format as the size and portability allowed me to take my camera everywhere and with that, some of my favorite images were on my Olympus. Coupled with some good glass like the Panny 20mm 1.7, the images were amazing and SHARP.

Fast forward to today, I decided to try out the new Nikon Z50 as a way to go full Nikon and possibly get rid of my Olympus. Not because of image quality, but the autofocus on the Em10 Mark I (over 7 yr old camera) was slow especially when trying to track my daughter. I used the Z50 for a little over a week and sure the images were great as was the autofocus, but I hated having to use the Z adapter to use my other glass as it added more bulk which defeated the purpose of such a small camera. To sum things up, I returned the Z50 and ultimately purchased the Olympus em5 mark iii and I could not be happier. The Em5 mark iii sensor is a big improvement from the older 16mp m43 sensor, the dynamic range is GREAT, low light has definitely improved, and 20mp is perfect for whatever I need to shoot. As for image comparisons with the Z50 vs Em5 iii, I can honestly say the the Em5 iii is neck and neck with the Z50. The kit lens on the Z50 is stellar and portrays excellent color and sharpness but nothing the Em5 iii can''t do. Once you throw on some good glass, the Olympus really shows you what it can do and that updated sensor shines!

Overall, I am extremely happy with this camera. The JPEG colors are vibrant and pop, the stabilization is incredible, the autofocusing is SOOOO much better, the PRO capture is awesome for bird photography, and the EVF is probably the best I''ve used. If you''re a M43 user or someone looking into getting into the format, this is a great camera with the ability to shoot casually AND professionally especially with the amazing M43 glass out there. A++

For family, event, travel and other photography, it is the very best moderately small and light digital camera today, but not cheap! Olympus may not discount this model for a long time. For faster-than-light young kids, it is a photo moment saver, even more so with ProCapture. Actually I counted at least a dozen important but seemingly small innovations ... they add up to a very impressive camera, especially for eyeglasses wearers (with the unique 27 mm high eye point viewfinder cannot be overstated, to see all corners/edges of the frame). This model has so many new features to grow your skills which makes it a keeper for many years to come.

This is an excellent camera, and I am writing this review only as a means of making some noise about the fact that currently it doesn''t have the capability of tethering to my laptop through the Olympus Capture software. I purchased this as a do-it-all travel camera. I was excited to test it out and see what it was capable of given the reviews. What I found is the image stabilization is at the top of its class. I could take 6 second hand-held exposures at night. The problem is the overall image quality. The RAW color-science is just not natural compared to my Canons and this makes it more difficult to edit in post. Noise is a constant problem in even moderately lit photos. I expected this camera to be slightly more noisy than my APS-C Canon but the difference was much worse--just slightly better than my 4 year old iPhone X. Don''t even think about going above ISO 1000. The dynamic range is only so-so and you cannot pull much detail out of shadows without immediately getting terrible noise and banding.

The 12-45mm Pro lens is nice and crisp but flares badly in longer exposures (see pic)--which kind of offsets the advantage of the IBIS. At first, I thought it was dust but the lens was completely clean. The only way around this is to use the Livecomp setting and stack multiple exposures. But this requires the camera to be on a tripod or something stationary which, again, defeats the purpose of such a compact camera.

Overall, I just cannot see a place for this camera in my life. A new smartphone can take photos that are nearly as good (or even better) and can fit in my pocket. For anything more serious, I have my APS-C and full frame Canons. I really wanted to love this camera but cannot justify the high price and mediocre image quality.
